NEW SHADE STRUCTURE FOR AREAS 2 AND 3

September/October 2009

Until this year, Area 2 (primarily used for medium and small dogs) and Area 3 (our "special needs" area) did not have any shade on the east side of the park. Past volunteer projects consisted of shade structures in Area 1 (on the East/West), Area 2 (on the West), and trees planted on the North and South.

Building the shade structure for Areas 2 and 3 had been delayed for several years due to speical circumstances such as funding and poor drainage. Thanks to contributions by our dog park visitors and volunteers from our pet owners, a shade structure spanning the divider fence between Area 2 and 3 was completed this month.

Travis Taylor, one of our pet owners, took on the responsibility of Project Manager and coordinating with the park district as well as getting volunteers, and making sure that all resources were availble to complete the project. John Weimer, a Fair Oaks volunteer, was the straw boss. A special note regarding John Weimer. John is not a dog owner -- yet he volunteered many hours in designing, pre-fabricating the structure, and supervising the volunteers at the project site. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO JOHN.

The drainage problem was solved by creating two cement pads using pervious concrete. Pervious concrete captures stormwater and allows it to seep into the ground and is filtered by a layer of gravel.

Phase I: Required two pads to be dug approximately 16 inches deep with a 12 inch layer of gravel that would reside under the pervious layer. It took approximately 16 hours in 100 degree heat to dig the pads. Steel supports for the shade structure were cemented in place. Travis rented and drove a backhoe and John donated his personal front loader to assist. A total of 5 volunteers completed this phase.

Phase II: Pervious concrete is layed and left to cure for two weeks.
Phase III: Now we build the structure:

Phase IV: Protect it with water seal - completed October 17, 2009.
