The Phoenix Dog Park is now open.  We hope you and your four legged friends get to enjoy the park soon!

As a reminder the park will periodically close throughout the winter and spring when conditions become too wet.  This is done to help preserve the grass for year round enjoyment.  Notifications will be sent out to inform you of any such closures.

Fair Oaks Recreational Park District

As reported to you earlier, the Fair Oaks Recreation and Park District (FORPD) wants to make some significant improvements to the Phoenix Dog Park.  Those improvements include a redesign of the turf to reduce water usage and improve turf quality, the addition of some permanent seating and more shade, and improved signage and water features.

FORDOG continues to meet with park district staff and board members to develop a plan and common vision that will be cost effective and reduce water consumption in deference to the current drought. FORDOG's key priorities are to ensure we are able to keep some grass while doing our part for water conservation, to resolve the ongoing water leaks, to provide  better water features that keep dog's cool with less water waste, and to increase shade in the park.

None of these goals are easy or inexpensive, and as such, the adoption and funding of a final agreed upon plan is a ways off.  At this point, it looks like it is unlikely we will have a proposal ready for consideration until sometime after the first of the year, due to competing park district demands and our mutual interest in getting this right.  Once the working group has a plan we can agree on, it will be presented to park users for input and taken to the park district board for final action.

We are pleased with the district's dedication to working with us and listening to our input, and we understand that it is a process that takes time and cooperation on everyone's part. We will keep you posted as agreements are reached and plans moved forward.

Thursday dog park closures to continue

As a reminder, the Phoenix Dog Park is closed for maintenance every Thursday until 5 pm, re-opening at  5 pm until dusk during the summer months when it is still light at that time.

Some of our Phoenix Dog Park users have noted that the dog park has been open on some Thursday's, causing some confusion as to whether the Thursday closures were still in place.  Others have wondered why they don't see workers out there every Thursday working on the park, - if maintenance is the goal of the Thursday closures.

We spoke with park district staff and were informed that the occasional unlocking of the dog park gates during the day on Thursdays, was due to human error, and that their intent is to continue to keep it closed every Thursday on a permanent basis until 5 pm, re-opening only from 5 pm until dusk during the summer months.  In response to our query, the park district has reinforced with staff/contractors that gates be locked every Thursday until 5 pm.

Park district staff also noted that the weekly closure does not mean that we will see workers out there every Thursday.  A key reason for the weekly closures is to allow the turf to rest one day a week, standard dog park practice critical to maintaining a healthy turf when grass is the key medium.  Weekly closures facilitate turf regeneration as well as regular infrastructure maintenance. and FORDOG supports this approach as prudent management of the dog park.

Send us your E-Mail Address.   FORDOG keeps their mailings to a minimum, but it's a great way to let our Dog Park users know quickly if we need assistance such as donated bags, tennis balls, or if we need volunteers for a K9 event.   FORDOG never gives out anyone's address. We consider that private information.

Please send your E-Mail address to FORDOG95628@GMail.Com or  E-Mail us if you have any questions about the Dog Park.

Thanking you in advance for your support.

STATEMENT OF APPRECIATION TO THE FORDOG MEMBERSHIP

The Phoenix Dog Park has been a very successful community project since its inception in 2002. We are establishing an excellant reputation in the neighborhood as a well-run facility that is an asset to the community.

The Dog Park was originally created as a "Test Case" with the Park District in 2001 and has proven so successful that the Park District included a new dog park in their 5-year Phoenix Park improvement plans. This new park was officially opened for business on October 22, 2006.

The FORDOG Steering Committee would like to thank all of the responsible dog owners (our "membership") who have helped keep our Dog Park safe and clean. We would also like to thank the many of you who have generously contributed to the support of Phoenix Dog Park in so many ways.
